Sunset in Tarifa

Where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic

Tarifa is mainland Spain's southernmost town, in the province of Cádiz. Its old town, of Andalusi origin, still holds stretches of wall and the Guzmán el Bueno Castle. The combination of strong easterly and westerly winds in the Strait of Gibraltar has made it one of Europe's best-known wind-sports destinations.

What to see and do

Isla de las Palomas

The southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, linked to the town by a causeway road. Its lighthouse marks the line where the Mediterranean and Atlantic meet, with Africa visible across the Strait on clear days.

Guzmán el Bueno Castle

A fortress begun in the 10th century and expanded in the 13th, with the albarrana tower that gives the complex its name. Site of the famous 1294 siege, when Alonso Pérez de Guzmán refused to surrender the town in exchange for his own son's life.

Kitesurfing at Punta Paloma

The easterly and westerly winds make this area one of the world's benchmark spots for kitesurfing and windsurfing, with schools for every level.

Whale and dolphin watching

Boat trips through the Strait of Gibraltar to see dolphins year-round, and orcas between July and September.
