Papa Luna Castle

Peñíscola is known as the "City in the Sea": a walled old town on a rocky peninsula, almost surrounded by water on every side. This guide brings together the essentials to make the most of your stay at Casa Blava, a short walk from the historic centre.
Peñíscola's old town crowns a fortified peninsula of Moorish and Templar origin. Its most iconic building is the Papa Luna Castle, built by the Knights Templar in the 13th century and famous for having been the residence of Pope Benedict XIII — known as "Papa Luna" — during the Western Schism in the early 15th century. Its cobbled streets and walls have also served as a film location, from "El Cid" (1961) starring Charlton Heston to scenes shot for "Game of Thrones".

Set at the highest point of the peninsula, right next to the castle. A great spot to watch the sunset over the sea.
White alleyways, staircases, flower-filled corners and terraces to eat or grab a drink. Best enjoyed by wandering without a fixed plan.
Peñíscola has several kilometres of beach on both sides of the old town, with fine sand and castle views from the shore — like the one in the photo above.
Through July and August, the Papa Luna Castle hosts classical theatre performances on a truly unique stage.
Every July since 2003, with international jazz names performing in the old town.
In August, the International Festival of Early and Baroque Music fills the castle surroundings with concerts.
At the end of the year, the walled old town fills with stalls and a medieval atmosphere.
